・話が前後する the talk moves back and forth out of sequence

4 〔用のある話; その内容〕 (相談) consultation; conferring; discussion; (談判) negotiations; talks; bargaining.●ちょっと君に話がある. I want to speak to you a moment. | I want a word with you.
・社長から海外出張の話があったが断った. The president offered to send me on a business trip abroad, but I declined.
・息子の就職口のことでいい話が舞い込んできた. We've gotten word of a rather interesting opportunity in regard to my son's employment.
・話がつく[まとまる] come to [arrive at] an understanding 《with…》; reach (an) agreement 《with…》; come to terms 《with…》; reach an accommodation 《with…》; 〔商売上の〕 strike [close] a bargain
・…ということに話が決まった. It was agreed that…. | They came to terms on the basis that….
・話がこじれる talks [discussions] falter [break down]
・話がよすぎる[うますぎる]. That story [offer, news] sounds too good to be true.
・なんだ, その店を知ってるんなら, 話が早い. そこで待ち合わせしようと思うんだ. Oh, if you know the place, there's no problem. Let's meet there.
●話に乗る 〔相談に乗る〕 agree to listen to [consult with] 《sb on a matter》; 〔提案・勧誘に応じる〕 go along with [accept] 《a proposal [an idea]》
・話に乗ってくる 〔会話に入ってくる〕 take part in [be brought into] a discussion; respond; 〔誘いに乗る〕 be persuaded to accept; respond positively 《to a feeler》; rise to the bait.
●話によってはきみの案に賛成できるかもしれない. Depending on what you have to say, I might be able to agree to your proposal.
●話をつける 〔交渉する〕 negotiate 《with…》; arrange 《with…》; have it out 《with…》; 〔まとめる〕 settle a matter; settle accounts 《with…》
・話を持ちかける[持ちこむ] propose; approach sb with a proposal
・彼には私から話をする. I'll take the matter up with him.
・お父さんもお子さんの話をよく聞いてあげてください. It's very important as a father that you really listen to what your child is trying to say.

6 〔うわさ〕 a rumor; a report; news; an account.●…という話だ people [they] say that…; it is said that….
●みんなの話では彼はなかなかの学者らしい. According to what people say, he seems to be a good scholar.
・町中がその話で持ち切りだ. The whole town talks of nothing else.
・話だけで終わらせたくないいい構想だ. That's too good an idea to be left on the drawing board.
●それがかねて話に聞いていた森会長であった. That was Chairman Mori of whom I had heard (so much) before.
・話によると彼女は近くアメリカに行くそうだ. It's said that she's going to the US soon?
●彼には浮いた話の一つもない. In his case, there's been no whisper of any romantic entanglements.
●この方が先日お話をした野口さんです. This is Mr. Noguchi whom I spoke of (to you) the other day.
●「タクシーが値下げだって」「うん, そういう話だね」 “Taxi fares are coming down?”―“That's what they say.”
・その話は当てにならない. The report is unreliable.

7 〔道理〕 reason; sensibility.●あの男は話がわかる. He is sensible.
●話の通じないやつだ. He's someone who doesn't understand [listen to] reason.
8 〔事情〕 the facts.●それでは話が違う. 〔約束と違う〕 That is not [goes against, is contrary to] our understanding [agreement]. | 〔前言と違う〕 That isn't what you said before. | That's not the way I heard [understood] it.
・そうなればまた話が違う. That's another question [story]. | That alters the case.
・話がどうも混乱してきたぞ. 三人の証言が食い違っている. What with the three witnesses contradicting one another, the case has gotten very messy.
●それが話のわかっていない証拠だ. That shows you don't understand the facts.
●そうなっていれば話は大いに違っていたかもしれない. It might have made all the difference in the world. | The story might have been very different then.

9 〔こと〕 a matter; a case; a story.●よくある話さ. It is the same old story.
・修理するより買い換えた方が安いなんて, ばかな話じゃないか. It's nonsense to suggest that buying a new one would be cheaper than repair costs.
話にならない 1 〔問題にならない・取り上げる値打ちがない〕 be beneath mention; be hardly worth discussing [bringing up].●てんでお話にならない. It is quite out of the question. | It is not worth mentioning. | It is beneath mention.
・彼の講演はお話にならないものだった. His speech was below criticism [not worth criticizing].
・私の稼いだ金は話にならないほど小額であった. The pittance I earned was hardly worth mentioning.
2 〔話す相手としてだめだ〕 be pointless trying to discuss a matter with sb.●アルバイトでは話にならん, 店長を出せ. Talking to (a part-timer like) you is a waste of time―get me the store manager.
話に花が咲く talk grows lively [animated, interesting].●昔の話に花が咲いた. Their talk of the past grew warm (with feeling).
話に花を咲かせる engage in animated conversation; have a lively discussion.結婚話 marriage talks; an offer [a proposal] of marriage. [=えんだん5]ひそひそ話 ⇒ひそひそ(と).身の上話 ⇒みのうえばなし.
